KENPO

Ed Parker Sr. is considered the founder of American Kenpo. Master Parker described Kenpo as “a modern term” for the more innovative systems of the Martial Arts which originally started in Hawaii; it is heavily practiced in the Americas, and has now spread worldwide. KEN means fist and PO means law.  The term stems from the Chinese “Kempo” which refers to all migrating Chinese Martial Arts outside of China.  Master Parker brought Kenpo from Hawaii to the mainland and created numerous innovative concepts and principles.  Kenpo is a system of self defense based on logic and the scientific study of movement.  By studying motion in all its nuances, Kenpo becomes extremely effective.  There are no wasted movements so; energy can be conserved for the speed, power and focus needed for delivering devastating strikes.

MKKS was created by Lee Lowery in 1976.  Professor Lowery earned his black belt from Richard Griffin who was versed in Tracy Kenpo.  Professor Lowery taught an eclectic form of Kenpo that blended parts of Parker, Tracy and other forms of martial arts that he experienced.  All of the moves specialize in self esteem, confidence gaining, and self control.  MKKS has produced well over 75 Black Belts and has been a strong member of the Middletown community. Professor Lowery has moved on from teaching marital arts classes and has since passed MKKS down to his higher ranking students: Tom Allen and Joe Vecchitto.  A more recent change over is to Lynnette Hurlburt.Currently at MKKS we still focus on Professor Lowery’s brand of Kenpo.  We maintain our traditional learning’s of Kenpo, but focus is placed on how to handle a situation rather than having to fight your way out.  Also, our training incorporates character development such that we develop a black belt from the inside out.
